APAN Condemns Australian Government’s Invitation to Israeli President

The Australia Palestine Advocacy Network (APAN) has strongly condemned the Australian government’s decision to invite Israeli President Isaac Herzog to the country. In a statement released on 24 December, APAN described the invitation as “a grave moral failure and a direct insult” to hundreds of thousands of Australians who have spent more than two years protesting Israel’s ongoing actions in Gaza and demanding accountability under international law.

Hawzah News Agency- APAN highlighted that Herzog is not merely a ceremonial figure. “As Israel’s Head of State throughout its genocidal assault on Gaza, he has made public statements widely condemned as indicative of genocidal intent, including asserting that an ‘entire nation’ bears responsibility and that ‘there are no innocent civilians in Gaza’”, the statement said. APAN warned that such rhetoric legitimizes collective punishment and mass civilian killings.

APAN expressed concern that Australians may be restricted from protesting Herzog’s visit and could face criminal charges, describing such measures as “a dangerous escalation that erodes democratic freedoms to shield a visiting foreign leader from accountability''.

The statement concluded by asserting that “Australia must not welcome those who are active participants and proponents of Israel’s genocide, nor reward war crimes with diplomatic invitations, nor suppress dissent to shield them from scrutiny''.
